Lance Stewart, Ph.D., M.B.A.
Chair of Advisory Board, Emerald BioStructures

Dr. Stewart co-founded Emerald BioStructures, Inc. in 1998 and led the growth of Emerald as a business unit within two publicly traded companies (MCLS and DCGN) and the successful spin out from deCODE genetics in November 2009. During his tenure, Dr. Stewart oversaw Emerald’s research that supported the discovery of eight investigational new drug molecules for clients’ projects. In November 2011, Dr. Stewart moved out of the CEO role for Emerald to pursue new opportunities while continuing to serve as Chair of the Emerald’s Advisory Board. Dr. Stewart also serves as a Co-principal Investigator for the Seattle Structural Genomics Center for Infectious Disease (SSGCID), a five-year NIAID-funded collaboration that is solving approximately 500 protein crystal structures of novel infectious disease targets.

Dr. Stewart earned his B.Sc. in Biology from McMaster University in 1987 and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Virology from Cornell University in 1992. He served as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Assistant Professor in the Departments of Microbiology and Biological Structure at the University of Washington from 1992 to 1997 where he was trained in the field of protein X-ray crystallography and used these methods to elucidate the structure of human topoisomerase I (topo I). Dr. Stewart earned his Executive M.B.A. from the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business in 2003. He has been the principal investigator (PI) for several Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program grants from the National Institutes of Health, and the Accelerated Technologies Center for Gene to 3D Structure (ATCG3D), a NIGMS/NCRR co-sponsored Specialized Center of the Protein Structure Initiative 2. Dr. Stewart has been author or co-author on 70 papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, 5 book chapters, and is an inventor on 9 issued U.S. patents. He is also a Co-PI for the Seattle Structural Genomics Center for Infectious Disease (SSGCID) a contract funded by the NIAID.

John McCall, Ph.D.
Member of Advisory Board, Emerald BioStructures

Dr. McCall brings expertise in drug discovery, risk minimization, and medicinal chemistry. He has worked in a number of disease areas, including psychiatric,  acute and chronic neurologic, inflammatory, and metabolic disorders. He is currently President, PharMac LLC. McCall began his career as a medicinal chemist with Upjohn and has subsequently held positions with Pharmacia & Upjohn, Pharmacia, and Pfizer. McCall was Director of CNS Research with Upjohn, Vice President and Global Head of Chemistry for both Pharmacia and Pharmacia & Upjohn and Vice President Research with Pfizer. McCall currently chairs a NINDS development team in the spinal muscular atrophy area, serves on 13 administrative and scientific advisory boards, consults with three venture capital funds, is a partner with the Apjohn Group, and has co-founded VBPharma. Other board and scientific advisory board appointments include Psychogenics, UCB, CeeTox, Deciphera, Lycera, Synergenics, Michigan High Throughput Screening Center, Verseon, CINRG, Reaction Biology, Scripps, AdmetRx, Nimbus, Validus Biopharma, The European Institute of Oncology, PharmOptima, the Treat Neuromuscular Disorders Therapeutics Advisory Committee, the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, and the International Rett Syndrome Foundation. John holds 53 US patents and has over 60 refereed publications.
